N E SAGRES
The sail training ship "N E Sagres" of the Portuguese Navy recently paid a visit to Philadelphia PA USA. We had hoped to see it leaving Lisbon but it left on 8 Mar so we missed it by about 20 days. But we were fortunate to see it arrive in Philadelphia on 23 June 2000 along with the other Tall Ships.
The ship was incorporated into the Portuguese Navy on 8 February 1962 and became the sail training ship of the Portuguese Navy.
Here it is with the proud name of Sagres on it's stern and Prince Henry leading the way on the bow. For more information about Sagres and Prince Henry visit our page.
The members of the ships compliment were very courteous and friendly. They certainly made you feel right at home and they were an asset to Portugal.

It was very inspiring to look up at these tall sails. That have guided this magnificent ship into 113 foreign ports in 45 countries. The ship also has had two world circumnavigations. So this ship with the Portuguese Cross of Christ on her sails follows in the foot steps of Prince Henry at the start of the Portuguese discoveries and expansion.
May the wind always be on your back "Sagres" ----- Boa Viagem, esperemos que Volte brevemente.
On her way back to Portugal the Sagres visited the Azores. Here is a picture of her resting at the "molhe" pier in Horta, Faial.
