This is a sampling of photos taken by Inácio Ludgero while on assignment for Visão in East Timor during the month of August 1999. The full collection of photos that depict the events that happened in East Timor during those months has been shown throughout Portugal and Spain. East Timor was granted independence from Portugal in 1974. In 1975 Indonesia invaded East Timor and took the country over. In 1999 the UN gave the East Timor people the right to vote for a referendum permitting them to become an independent country or remain part of Indonesia. The people vote by 74% to become an independent country. These pictures show the events leading up to the referendum and the period following.
